I recently had the opportunity to speak with the CIO of an innovative US passenger airline. This gentleman had just finished a presentation about how his organization is beyond aligned with “the business” at his employer, an acknowledgement of the popular “align IT with the business” mantra that has been so common for the past few years and remains very popular today. He described how IT must be much more than simply a service provider for the broader organization, and he made the case convincingly.

Is Twitter the worlds largest EDA?

I was recently meeting with a customer in Europe about Complex Event Processing (CEP) topics when we wandered into the topic of Event Driven Architectures (EDA).  While the concept of EDA has been along for a long time, it seems that people still have a difficult time trying to understand in a personal way what is meant by EDA.  As we stumbled through various examples of how EDA exposes itself in everyday life, we stumbled upon Twitter.  Twitter has become more than just a micro-blogging site and as of last month it reached the level of two billion tweets per month, and has clearly established itself as a true internet phenomenon.  So how does this relate to EDA and CEP?  I would argue the Twitter is the worlds largest EDA and is gaining world wide acceptance because of this.

Gartner Publishes Middleware Market Share Data – So What?

On April 19 Gartner published “Market Share: Application Infrastructure and Middleware Software, Worldwide, 2009” (membership required for access). In the report, Gartner showed pretty healthy year-over-year growth of about 8% for the middleware market (which they call “Application Infrastructure and Middleware”, or AIM). It’s great that the report shows that Software AG is about 12% bigger than TIBCO in this market and that Software AG grew about 9% in product while TIBCO shrank by a bit more than 1% (or grew by a bit more than -1%?!?). Software AG is also the largest SOA Governance vendor and in the top five in BPMS, ESB and B2B software (and ahead of TIBCO in all of those).
